While it is wonderful that women are becoming more empowered using their sexuality in our culture today, there is the problem that a majority of the time it is only the thin, busty and physically fit women who are seen in the media. Whether we want to admit it or not, judgment is something that comes naturally to all of us. Whether we’re judging the qualities of a song we’re listening to on the radio or the qualities of a person next to us—we judge. Today with the influence of fashion magazines, television and the media in general, the human body has become something that is harshly judged by others and ourselves. What tends to be revered as beautiful in our society is the image of a woman who has been highly altered through Photoshop: thin, busty, flawless skin, no cellulite, full lips and bright eyes. However, this is not the way a majority of real women look but you see it in nearly every advertisement that comes your way. With the emphasis on how important it is to look a certain way in our culture, who a person is becomes an afterthought.During this performance, viewers were given the opportunity to quite literally vote on different women based solely on their physical forms. While the women had their faces covered and were not able to see the viewers or how they voted, it gave those participating an opportunity to transform their mental judgments into physical ones. Viewers were encouraged to think about why they feel the way they do about themselves and others while going through the space.
